Colleague Stories: Summer Internship with Carpenters Group

Lloyd Brookman recently completed his Summer Internship with our Serious and Catastrophic Injury team, he shared his experience with us:
"I am now coming to the end of my Summer Internship here at Carpenters Group and could not be more thankful for the experiences I have had here. From my first day, I was welcomed into the Serious and Catastrophic Injury team by a group of caring and understanding people, who allowed me to learn first-hand what to expect in the world of Personal Injury.
Working as a Paralegal within the team, I have learnt that accidents and injuries can affect people’s lives in many ways and it was our job to listen, support and guide these clients through what is a difficult time for them. Quickly shadowing and learning from others I was ready to help, this meant interacting with clients at an early stage of the claim process to really understand and gauge the injuries they had sustained, how exactly they had happened and how best we could help them. These calls allowed me to learn on my feet, especially when it came to what felt like a biology lesson, going through certain muscle groups, surgical procedures, or bones within the body. On top of how to properly interact with clients, knowing the right questions to ask to obtain all the relevant information as well as being sensitive to the situation they are going through and then finishing it all off by filing a detailed and accurate report on the client.
My experience here at Carpenters Group has taught me that no two days are the same in a Personal Injury firm, especially Serious injury. Whether it be the client triage calls, helping draft documents or witness statements, assembling large bundles for the Court chasing records/ reports and even attending important client meetings. Every day has meant experiencing and learning something new.
Of the many opportunities and experiences I have had so far at Carpenters Group, I would have to say that the first hand client/ person interaction has been incredibly thought provoking and something that I have enjoyed the most. Engaging with Barristers and clients within Chambers, going over the case at hand and identifying solutions and possible outcomes was just one of the various experiences that has shown me what the life of a solicitor at carpenters is like and what they as a firm expect from you.
I am incredibly grateful for the experience I have had so far with Carpenters Group and couldn’t be thankful enough to everyone within the firm and the Serious Injury team for making me feel welcomed, providing a thoroughly enjoyable summer internship and helping me along my journey in Law."
