New Head of Defence: Kevin Perkins

11 April 2025

Name:

Kevin Perkins

Role:

Head of Defence

Why a career in law:

I consider myself lucky because, from an early age, I knew I wanted to be a lawyer but where that inspiration comes from, I’ve no idea. I’ve always had an interest in the law and its nature and have a great memory and legal issues just tend to stick.

I still have my old Record of Achievement from school which records all the way back in Year 9 my ambition to be a solicitor and so it was a really proud moment for me when I eventually qualified.

What's the best thing about working at Carpenters?

I really enjoy the collaborative attitude throughout the business with everyone striving toward the same goal. I have met so many conscientious and talented people within the business all striving to meet the same goal of delivering a Grade A service to our clients be that from the Claimant side or Defence.

The amount of social and charitable initiatives the business supports is also really important to me and it is great to see how much the business gives back to the local community.

Most rewarding element of your role?

I enjoy the multi-faceted nature of my role, no two days are the same.

I am responsible for the department as a whole meaning as well as ensuring our teams are working as proactively and efficiently as possible I liaise with the different departments across the business be that I.T, Marketing or the Operational Board.

One element I really enjoy is answering technical questions that come in from our teams. I’ve learnt so much over the years through personal experience and my own research and because I have such a good memory I tend to remember all sorts of weird and wonderful solutions.

Career Highlight?

A few years ago I was instructed on a contempt application following a successful finding of fundamental dishonesty in a case I’d dealt with.

The matter was heard in the Royal Courts of Justice in London and I had to give evidence before a High Court Judge in support of the application.

It was very nerve wracking standing up in a traditional court in such a grand environment and giving evidence that would ultimately lead to a custodial sentence but also incredibly rewarding.

If you didn't a pursue a career in law, what career would you have pursued?

More than likely a welder.

I took a break between A-levels and my degree and during that time went to work for a steel fabrication business owned by my uncle.

I really enjoyed the work which involved travelling around the country and seriously considered taking the role further by enrolling in college and joining the family business.

Outside Interests:

My two children keep me on my toes!

My daughter is a keen equestrian and my son a Go-Karter so I find myself either at the stable or track several weekends a month.

Personally, I played football for my local district when I was younger and still follow my local team, I also enjoy dining out and travelling; I recently visited Costa Rica venturing into the Rainforest to see the Sloths which was an unforgettable experience.

Fun Fact:

I went to school with the former 2x World Superbike Champion, James Toseland
