Timeless Fundamentals

Donna Richards | CEO
In the latest issue of Modern Insurance Magazine, our CEO Donna Richards reflects on the evolution of the insurance market, highlighting the importance of maintaining strong relationships, accountability and attention to detail in an increasingly fast-paced, technology-driven environment.

While the market has evolved in many positive ways, there are aspects of how it operated in the past that I believe still hold real value today and, in some cases, have been overlooked in the race for speed, scale and efficiency. One of the most important is the criticality of real relationships. Historically, our sector was built on long standing personal connections between insurers, brokers, legal partners and, most importantly, customers. Decisions were grounded in trust, reputation and a deep understanding of one another's businesses and values. You knew who you were dealing with, you picked up the phone, and you took the time to talk things through. That personal contact created accountability and a shared sense of responsibility for successful outcomes.

In a more automated, transactional environment, there's a risk that those relationships become diluted. Technology is an incredible enabler, but it should support human connection, not replace it. At Carpenters Group, we see time and again that the best outcomes are achieved when people genuinely know one another and when there's openness, continuity and the confidence to have honest conversations. Relationships still matter, and they always will.

Another aspect that deserves renewed focus is attention to detail. In the past, work was often slower, but it was also more deliberate. Files were reviewed carefully, nuances were explored, and there was pride in getting things right first time. That discipline is particularly important in complex, high stakes environments like ours, where the smallest detail can have a significant impact on someone's life.

Today, pace and volume can sometimes overshadow precision. The challenge and the opportunity is to combine modern capability with that traditional mindset of care and thoroughness. Keeping an eye on the detail isn't about being risk averse or old fashioned but rather it's about professionalism, quality and respect for the people we serve.

Ultimately, progress doesn't mean abandoning what worked before. The most successful organisations are those that blend the best of both worlds. Innovation and efficiency alongside strong relationships, personal accountability and meticulous attention to detail. Those fundamentals are timeless and they remain central to how we operate and how we lead in today's market.
