Whiplash Reform - Publication of the Medical Reporting Consultation Response

16 December 2024

Medical Reporting Organisations (MROs) left still lacking clear direction

The Government have today published the much overdue review to their Consultation on the medical reporting process for RTA claims up to the value of £5000, which concluded 14 months ago.

Whilst some clarity has been provided, other issues remain unclear, especially with regard implementation date.

What do we know?

The volume requirement for Tier 1 MRO’s will be reduced to 28,000; active experts falling to 175 and the number of offered MROs is changing  to two Tier 1’s, five Tier 2’s and for Direct Medical Expert (DME’s), to remain at seven.

The use of  administrative agencies will be assessed and audited by MedCo and held to the same standards as MROs.

What next?

We are still waiting for more clarity. Whilst the Government have confirmed recoverable fees for MedCo reports are to increase for the first time since 2014, and by SPPI inflation modelling, by how much is yet to be answered.

For all above changes, the Government have advised they will be implemented in “2025”, leaving the industry with uncertainty around their business planning.
