Guidance on some Practical Issues

Navigating Serious and Catastrophic injury can involve a range of complex and often challenging issues.

See guidance on some of these practical issues below.

The complexities of brain injury can make it difficult for people to ask for support when needed. Carrying the official Headway Brain Injury Identity Card gives clients the confidence to know that if clients need help, their needs can quickly be identified. This is useful in social situations or if clients come into contact with the emergency services. The card is available to anyone over 18 with a brain injury. The Child brain Injury Trust provide a similar card for children and young people.

We understand the frustration clients will feel living with an injury that is sometimes invisible. We will help signpost clients to organisations such as Headway that offer invaluable support and information. There are many branches of Headway across the UK and many of those will provide information or host educational days to help family and friends better understand what it is like to live with a brain injury.

Clients will be guided by their doctor but must notify the DVLA if they wish to drive after a brain injury which qualifies as a notifiable injury. Each case is considered on its own merits. Often a driving assessment or even refresher lessons are recommended. If possible, an adaptable vehicle or motorbility vehicle will be considered.

Anyone who lives in the UK can apply. The purpose of the fund is to support families who face an increased financial burden following brain injury. Priority is given to families with limited funds and can help with travel for visits, outpatient appointments, emergency accommodation or other family costs. We can help clients to apply for a payment out of this fund.

Some of our clients are entitled to benefits following their injuries. It is important that the correct benefits are claimed and expert assistance with this is very important. Other clients need assistance with insurance claims through permanent health policies. We will ensure that assistance is provided.

Many of our clients get to the point where they think about returning to work. The case manager or a vocational rehabilitation expert can help with this transition. If they find they are not able to return to their old job, they can explore helping them back into alternative work or even voluntary work if they are able. Any loss of income, pension or perks are included in their compensation claim.

We understand that noise, crowds and busy places can be difficult for people with certain serious injuries. We also understand that after an injury it is sometimes difficult to maintain friendships and the same social life as before. We will ensure that the case managers and therapists working with clients listen to them and work with them on coping mechanisms and strategies so that they can get back to enjoying a social life.

We know that taking holidays after serious injury can be daunting. We work with very experienced case managers who can help ensure clients and their family can enjoy holidays in the UK and abroad. They can organise the support workers, equipment that is needed, help with holiday insurance, travel arrangements and accommodation that meets their needs. For example - they can organise pre flight assessments with airlines to ensure a smooth experience at the airport. The additional costs associated with a holiday will be included in their claim.
