Why Reliability Matters in Supplier Partnerships
Mike Dunne | Senior Account Manager
Innovation and technology understandably dominate many conversations about the future of insurance but behind every successful supplier relationship is something much less complicated. Knowing you can rely on the people you work with.
For Carpenters Group, that matters because our clients trust us to deliver an important part of their service. Often, we are supporting people following an accident or at another difficult point in their lives. The experience they have with us can influence how they feel about the business they originally turned to for help.
Reliability therefore has to mean more than meeting contractual requirements or achieving KPIs. Those things are important, but they are also expected. The real test is whether a client knows you will do what you have promised and be open with them when circumstances change.
That sounds straightforward but in practice, delivering consistently within claims and legal services can be anything but. Customer circumstances differ and pressures can change. What one client needs from a relationship may also be very different from another. That is why understanding the client matters as much as understanding the contract.
A successful relationship requires us to know what the client is trying to achieve and what matters most to their customers. Without those conversations with our clients, it is difficult to provide the kind of support that genuinely adds value. It also allows the relationship to develop. Rather than responding only when something is requested, a supplier can begin to recognise opportunities and bring ideas to the table.
Sometimes those ideas will involve technology or changes to a process. At other times, the answer may be much simpler. Better communication or clearer management information can make a meaningful difference, as can removing an unnecessary step for the customer.
The important thing is understanding the problem before deciding on the solution and the same is true when something goes wrong. No supplier can realistically promise that there will never be challenges. In a complex claims environment, there will inevitably be occasions when something does not go as expected. What clients should be able to expect is honesty about what has happened and ownership of what happens next.
In fact, some of the strongest partnerships are those where difficult conversations can happen openly. If both sides can challenge one another and talk honestly about what needs to improve, problems can lead to better ways of working and ultimately better outcomes for our customers.
However, reliability should not mean standing still either. The insurance market continues to change and the expectations placed on suppliers change with it. A service that worked well several years ago will not necessarily meet what clients or their customers need today.
Being dependable therefore also requires adaptability. We need to listen to what clients are telling us and challenge ourselves when there is a better way of doing something.
At Carpenters Group, that is an important part of how we approach our role as a provider of insurance solutions. We want clients to know they can depend on the service we deliver, but we also want to understand where we can make a difference. Ultimately, that is where the distinction between a supplier and a trusted partner becomes clear.
A supplier can deliver exactly what it has been contracted to provide and do it well. A partner understands the bigger picture. They know when to listen and when to challenge. When something needs to change, they take responsibility for helping to move it forward. Their focus is not simply on delivering their part of the service, but on contributing to the outcome the client is trying to achieve.
Those relationships do not appear overnight. They are built over time through the way people work together and the confidence created by consistently delivering on what has been promised. Reliability might not be the newest idea being discussed in our industry, but perhaps that is exactly the point. Technology will develop, processes will change and new challenges will emerge. Clients will still need partners they know they can depend on.
For us, that is what being a trusted partner is really about.
