Carpenters Group Serious Injury Team Secure Life Changing Brain Injury Settlement
Our Serious Injury team has secured Court approval for a multi-million pound settlement in a profoundly life changing brain injury claim, helping to provide long-term security and support for the client.
Carol Hopwood, Head of Serious Injury, and Donna Ellis Connell, Chartered Legal Executive, led the case, navigating not only the serious injuries sustained, but an exceptionally complex set of legal, welfare and statutory funding issues. The claim was described by both sides as one of the most complex pieces of litigation they had ever encountered.
At the heart of this case was the need to navigate not just the legal challenges, but also the human ones - ensuring that the client’s best interests, dignity and long-term wellbeing remained central at every stage.
A huge thank you and recognition must go to Donna Ellis-Connell, whose outstanding work on this matter has been remarkable. Her empathy, patience and expertise in exceptionally challenging circumstances exemplify the very best of what we strive to achieve in serious injury litigation.
We are also incredibly grateful to Rhiannon Jones KC, whose skill and compassionate approach were invaluable throughout this journey.
Finally, thanks go to Admiral Insurance and their panel of solicitors for their commitment to collaborative working despite some challenging issues. In cases of this complexity, a constructive and cooperative approach can make a meaningful difference - and that was clearly demonstrated here.
This settlement represents not just a legal outcome, but an important step forward in securing our clients future financial, care and other needs.

Carol Hopwood, Head of Serious Injury, said:
“Donna and I have been on a journey with our client. The complexities, and at times novel challenges, of this particular case required the most sensitive and expert handling. We are delighted that the matter has been concluded in a way that ensures our client’s financial, care and other needs will be met for the rest of their life.
"But it is important to remember that this is not a ‘win’ or a ‘windfall’. Our client would far rather be living a full and normal life. Compensation provides security, but it cannot give them their life back. The tragedy is that the collision could so easily have been avoided.”
