Team Carpenters Complete a Six Week Step-Up Challenge

09 September 2025
This summer, Carpenters Group launched a company-wide wellbeing initiative called “Step UP: Stride into Summer”, designed to get us all moving.

The six-week challenge invited colleagues from across the business to walk, run, roll, or dance their way to better health, one step at a time.

It wasn’t just about fitness; it was about motivation and supporting each other. Whether you were pacing through remote meetings, or confidently running a local 10K, every step counted and together, we clocked up a staggering 23,363,249 steps - that’s the equivalent of walking from Liverpool to Wellington, New Zealand.

Why We Stepped Up

The campaign was about embracing a challenge together as colleagues and helping one another make time to move and get those critical lumens. Our people took on city strolls, scenic hikes in the Pennines and even coastal runs with furry friends - each participant embraced the challenge in their own unique way.

Helena King, one of our top steppers, who finished the competition at an astounding 1,206,755 steps, shared how walking helped her recover from a knee injury and rediscover new routes near her home. “I’ve always loved hiking,” she said. “Living in the Pennines means I’m spoiled for choice.

"Running started as a way to lose weight in my forties, but it quickly became a bit of an obsession. Fell and trail runs are my favourite - there’s something about the terrain and scenery that keeps me going.”

Her advice for new walkers and runners? “Invest in good footwear. Get a gait analysis if you can. Use walking poles, wear proper socks, and never hike in jeans. And don’t forget the Vaseline - it’s a lifesaver for preventing blisters!”

Scott Eves, another consistent top stepper, finished the six weeks on a fantastic 670,976 steps, He found motivation in his surroundings and community. “I’ve been running with my local club and walking our Cocker Spaniel, Benji. Running helps me look after both my physical and mental health. If you’re thinking of starting, the running community is incredibly supportive - parkruns and local clubs are a great way to get involved.”

Celebrating Our People

From the start, the campaign was designed to be inclusive of all abilities and above all, fun. Whether standing, strolling, or rolling, everyone could take part. Weekly leaderboards, milestone badges, and t-shirt rewards kept the energy high, whilst our internal social platform saw people share beautiful hiking views and of course, pictures of canine companions.

The competition was a fantastic opportunity for us to celebrate Carpenters colleagues for their achievements outside of work, as well as come together as community.  As Helena King put it, “I have a great bunch of teammates. We support each other and have a good rapport. Being part of such a strong team helps you get through tough days.”

Stepping On

The Step-Up challenge may be over but we are already thinking of what’s next.. We’ve proven that when we move together, we achieve more. Because every step is a stride towards better healthier, stronger teams, and a more connected Carpenters Group. Our connection means we are happier and healthier leading to better outcomes for our people and our customers. So watch this space….
