Supporting Life After Serious Injury
A deep dive into the specialist care, expertise and compassion it requires to provide legal support when it matters most.
Life can change in an instant. For those affected by serious or catastrophic injury, the impact is rarely limited to the injury itself. It touches every part of daily life, from physical and emotional wellbeing to loss of independence, financial security, relationships and future plans and dreams.
At Carpenters Group, our Serious Injury team exists to support people through some of the most difficult periods they will ever face. The work they do is complex and technical, but at its heart is something far more human. Listening. Understanding. Supporting people as they rebuild their lives.
A specialist team for complex cases
Carpenters Group has one of the most experienced and successful Serious Injury teams in the UK. The team acts on complex, high value claims involving life changing injuries, including traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputations, pain syndromes, multiple fractures and fatal cases.
These are not straightforward cases. They often involve long term rehabilitation, evolving medical needs and difficult decisions that affect not just the injured person, but their family too. Every journey is different, and the team recognises that no two cases should ever be treated the same.
What remains consistent is the approach. Clients are placed at the centre of everything. Their needs, goals and concerns shape the strategy from the outset.
Understanding the human impact
Serious injury is not only about what can be seen. Traumatic brain injuries, in particular, are often described as the invisible injury. The effects may not be immediately obvious, but they can be profound. Changes in memory, behaviour, fatigue or emotional regulation can be just as challenging as physical symptoms.
Ann Allister, Technical Director and Secretary to the UK Acquired Brain Injury Forum (UKABIF) for the North-west and North Wales region: “Brain injury cases can be incredibly challenging, not just for the individual but for everyone around them. What matters most to us is helping clients reach the end of a very difficult journey with as little additional stress as possible and knowing that we’ve made a positive difference along the way.”
Part of the team’s role is helping people make sense of what is happening, both legally and personally. That includes working with families, employers and support networks to improve understanding and ensure the right support is in place. The SI team is instrumental in helping people see that there is hope and better times ahead.
Clear communication is vital. Clients are kept informed throughout their case, with complex legal processes explained in a way that is accessible and reassuring. No one should feel left in the dark at a time when clarity matters most.
Rehabilitation focused from day one
A defining feature of the team’s work is its focus on early and effective rehabilitation. The goal is always to help clients maximise their recovery and reach their full potential, whatever that looks like for them. This means collaborating early with insurers to secure interim support where possible, ensuring rehabilitation begins without unnecessary delay. It also means working closely with a wide network of trusted medical and care professionals.
Peter Parsonage, Serious Injury Deputy Manager: “A good outcome isn’t about figures on a page. It’s about quality of life, recovery and making sure people have the support they need to move forward with dignity and independence.”
Independent experts play a crucial role. These may include neurologists, neuropsychologists, orthopaedic consultants, rehabilitation specialists and therapists across a range of disciplines. Their role is to assess the injury, recommend treatment and help build a clear picture of how the injury affects the client’s life now and in the future.
In many cases, a specialist case manager is appointed. Often coming from a nursing, occupational therapy or social work background, the case manager coordinates rehabilitation, liaises with medical professionals, recruits support workers and supports the families as they deal with the need for housing adaptations or specialist equipment. This joined up approach allows clients and families to focus on recovery, rather than logistics.
Support beyond the legal process
The Serious Injury team recognises that recovery does not happen in isolation. Practical concerns can quickly become overwhelming, particularly in the early stages following an injury.
Clients may need guidance around returning to driving, navigating changes to employment, accessing welfare benefits or understanding how relationships and social lives may be affected. Holidays, travel and day to day independence can all feel daunting after serious injury. The SI team are here to lighten that load and support clients as they step towards their new lives.
The team works alongside trusted partners and charities, including Headway UK, Aftermath Support and Brake, to provide access to additional guidance, peer support and practical assistance. Many of our team’s lawyers are personally involved with these organisations as trustees or volunteers, reinforcing the close connection between their professional work and the wider support community.
A collaborative mindset
Serious injury work requires a balance of robust legal expertise and constructive collaboration. The team is experienced in working with defendant insurers to achieve timely and effective outcomes that prioritise rehabilitation and long-term wellbeing.
This approach challenges outdated perceptions of personal injury claims. These cases are not about windfalls or conflict. They are about restoring quality of life, securing appropriate care and ensuring people can live with dignity and independence and find joy again.
By focusing on solutions rather than confrontation, the SI team aims to reduce unnecessary pressure on clients and help progress cases in a way that supports recovery.
Strength through collaboration
Internally, the Serious Injury team is highly collaborative. Knowledge sharing is embedded in how they work. The medical and legal landscape is constantly evolving, and no one individual can know everything.
David Walmsley, Serious Injury Solicitor: “Serious injury work is about teamwork, both within the department and with the people we support. I see my role as being there for clients, while also supporting colleagues and helping the next generation of lawyers develop the skills and empathy this work demands.”
By working closely together, mentoring junior colleagues and sharing expertise across the wider business, the team strengthens not only its own capability but the organisation as a whole. This commitment to learning and development ensures that clients benefit from the depth of experience across the team, not just one individual.
